1. Evaluate your needs.

Measure the width of the area of the room where the tree will stand. All our trees on the farm are trimmed so that they are tapered and symmetrical, which means that a 8' tall tree will be 5' wide.

2. Keep it watered.

As soon as you arrive home with your tree, place it in a bucket of water. Now, if a "crust" (from the sap) as formed on the butt of the tree, cut a thin slice (about 1/2" thick) off the butt and place the tree in water immediately.
Keep in mind that all trees can consume large amounts of water and that water consumption will decrease as time progresses. The amount of care you give your tree will determine it's freshness during the Christmas season.

3. Keep it wrapped.

Leave the wrapping or netting on the tree until you have brought it indoors and placed it in its stand. The netting makes it much easier to get your tree throught doors and hallways.

4. Be safety conscious.

Locate your tree well away from sources of heat, such as fireplaces, heater vents, stoves and space heaters. Heat tends to dry your tree and make it a fire hasard.
Faulty wiring in your string of lights may also cause fires. Test each string before using them in your tree. If they do not work properly and may not be readily repaired, discard them and purchase new ones. The risk of a fire is not worth the cost of a string of lights. At bedtime or when you are going to be out of the house, always unplug the lights.
